Musical Background
First Canadian born member of his family...Born in Chapleau 1962, shortly thereafter his family moved to Toronto. Inherited some musical talent from his grandfather "Paps" who was a championship drummer in 1940's. Dad also musically inclined, he played the cornet and other multiple brass instruments, as well as being a conductor of brass bands in Scotland and in Canada. George started playing drums at 12. Gained some rudimentary knowledge from playing in the drum and bugle corps.
George met Barrie Farrell in the early 80's at a rehearsal studio, formed a band, and through numerous personnel changes, became "Australia" with the legendary Stephen "Babyoil" Hall on bass and vocals. They achieved renowned success on Toronto's underground music scene in the early 80's, but through stressful times the band imploded under the pressure. Steve and George quickly threw together a Ramones cover band "Spike" with Ronnie "Sweetheart" Collie on guitar and vocals. After the disintegration of Spike, George floundered musically and eventually took a 15 year reprieve from playing drums, and started stroking the guitar.
Reunited with musical friends in 1998 at Babyoil's funeral, began jamming frequently with Barrie and Dennis "Slide" Rideout, forming The Wake and recording a tribute album to Babyoil. This band morphed into BABYOIL, with George recruiting young and innovative musicians George C and Alex who bring fresh new ideas to the band and George's long awaited guitar lessons!
Influences
Buddy Rich
Arguably the best jazz drummer of all time. Immensely gifted, could play with remarkable speed and dexterity, despite no formal training and refused to practice outside of his performances.
Clem Burke
Under rated drummer for Blondie in the '80s known for cool grooves and impressive fills and hits. Played two gigs for the Ramones as "Elvis" Ramone.
John Bonham
Famous for his pounding style, solid foundation and backbone of the band. One can only shake their head in awe of his thunderous power.
